Knob or Handle and Why?

Ok you want to replace the old door with a new one. What about the old hardware? Should you install a door knob or a handle? What are the benefits or drawbacks with both.
First, the installation is really the same for both, so don’t make you decision based on installation.
Really the only benefit of one vs. the other would be the handle has an edge of operation. People that have trouble opening or grasping object perfer handle rather than a knob. The simple act of pulling down on the handle is is much easier than gripping and twisting of the knob.
The appearance of a knob vs. a handle is really a personal preference. So use your judgement when replacing that old door hardware.

Changing Exterior Door Weather Stripping

So, your door is still in good shape, the jamb and frame isn’t rotten, but you feel cold air coming from the door. Your problem is most likely the weather-stripping.

On exterior doors, most manufacturers cut a groove the doors frame that accepts weather-stripping. It will simply pull out of the channel, and you can press new weather-stripping back in.

Changing old or worn out stripping will increase the efficiency of door. It’s a low-cost way to revitalize an old door without the costs of replacing the doorexterior door weather stripping .

Finger Jointed Trim And Door Jambs

What is a finger joint? Fingerjointing is a process in which short pieces of high-grade wood are end glued together to make long lengths of stock.
This process is somewhat like recycling. Short unusable pieces are turned into usable trim and jambs. Sounds great right, yes and no. The problem is if you stain the wood, you will be able to see the joints in the wood. This can create unsightly color variations in what is supposed to look like a single piece of wood.

Most often finger jointed door jambs and trim are quite straight and strong. However, using it as a paint grade trim is the best decision. Once painted you would see the joints where the trim is connected and glued.
